This two-day seminar provides an introduction to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML. It includes an overview of MBSE in terms of what it is and why we do it. We will cover Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML™) and give an overview of a MBSE method called OOSEM.

The overview of SysML includes an introduction to some of the key language concepts associated with the four pillars of SysML needed to describe the system requirements, behavior, structure and parametrics. The overview of the MBSE methodology highlights how systems engineering with SysML is used to perform typical systems engineering activities such as stakeholder needs analysis, requirements analysis, logical and physical architecture design, and supporting trade studies and analysis.

Although this course is not intended to be a hands-on tool-oriented course, attendees will participate in exercises and the instructor will demonstrate an MBSE tool. Participants will leave this seminar with a better understanding of the scope of MBSE and how they can explore its applicability in their own problem domain.

The course material is significantly drawn from the book, A Practical Guide to SysML, which the instructor co-authored. This book provides a detailed reference for people who choose to learn more about MBSE using SysML and may be purchased when you register online. It will also be available for purchase during the seminar.

About Your Instructor

Sanford Friedenthal

PhotoSanford "Sandy" Friedenthal is an INCOSE Fellow, an industry leader in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and an independent consultant. At Lockheed Martin, he led the effort to enable Model-Based Systems Development (MBSD) and other advanced practices across the company. His experience includes the application of systems engineering throughout the system life-cycle  – from conceptual design, through development and production on a broad range of systems in aerospace and defense.

While a systems engineering department manager, Friedenthal was responsible for providing systems engineering people, process, and tools to the programs. Friedenthal has been a leader of the Industry Standards effort through the Object Management Group (OMG) and INCOSE to develop the Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML™) that was adopted by the OMG in 2006. He is co-author of A Practical Guide to SysML.
