This course is designed to serve as a general introduction to aviation and to assist the student in preparing for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private Pilot, Recreational Pilot, and the new Sport Pilot written exams.
Federal regulations require that those who wish to take an FAA written test complete an approved course of study and verify completion of the study prior to taking the test. This ground school will provide the necessary training and the required recommendation for taking the test. In addition, those individuals interested in aviation, but who are not yet ready or able to begin the process of becoming a licensed pilot, are welcome to enroll in the course.
Areas of study
This course will offer 20 hours of instruction in 2.5 hour blocks. Areas of study include theory of flight, communication procedure, use of the flight computer, aviation weather, visual and radio navigation and federal aviation regulation. There will be extensive use of visual aids during the material presentation. The course presentation and discussion will include examination questions typical of those given on the FAA exam. The FAA written tests are computer tests and are administered at designated testing sites. Missouri testing sites are located throughout the state, including Springfield, St. Louis, and Columbia. Discussion of how to prepare for and schedule the computer test will be included at the completion of the ground school. The course course fee of $110 does not include the cost of taking the computer test.
Course Instructor Professor Emeritus Robert B. Oetting, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Missouri University of Science and Technology. Prof. Oetting is an experienced pilot and licensed by the FAA as a ground school instructor.
