A graduate certificate consists of 4* three-credit-hour courses. Upon completion, a student is mailed a physical certificate in the mail, and the certificate is reflected on the student’s transcript. A 3.0 gpa is required to earn a certificate.
Graduate certificates were created for working professionals as a way to learn a body of academic knowledge in a specialized area. Graduate certificates may also be used as a gateway to a master’s degree. If a student earns a B or better in each certificate course they may continue for the graduate degree (in the corresponding department), without needing to submit GRE/GMAT scores. A student does not need to continue on for the graduate degree, however most do. Application requirements for the graduate certificate program are also more relaxed than the graduate degree.
Credit earned for a certificate can be counted towards a graduate degree. So upon completing the 4* certificate courses a student has 6** more courses to earn a master’s degree.
Starting with a certificate does not waive any prerequisite requirements.
* Mining Engineering Graduate Certificate is a 5 course program.
** The MBA and I-O Psychology MS are 12 course (36 credit hours) programs. Upon completing a certificate a student has 8 more courses (24 credit hours) to complete these graduate degrees.
**The Computer Science MS is a 31 credit hour program (1 hour of seminar). Upon completing a Computer Science graduate certificate a student has 6 more courses + one 1 hour seminar course to complete their MS.
No, as long as you have earned a B or better in each certificate course GRE or GMAT scores will not be required.
Although most students do continue for their master's degree, it is not required. You are more than welcome to terminate after earning a certificate.
You will need to work with your advisor. You may need to submit GRE scores and reapply if you still wish to continue for the master’s degree.
Yes. Certificate students are just as eligible for financial aid as any other graduate student. Again, please keep in mind: graduate students need to be enrolled in at least 4 credit hours to be eligible for aid.
