Graduate Degree Programs
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
In our highly technical and automated world, there is a continual and growing demand for mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines you can enter. Mechanical engineers work in a wide spectrum of industries – aerospace, automotive, bioengineering, communications, food processing, petroleum, product manufacturing, etc. Missouri University of Science and Technology’s master’s degree program in mechanical engineering offers a comprehensive education in a wide variety of areas.
This is both a thesis and non-thesis degree program. The thesis degree requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework (at least 21 credit hours of coursework and at least 6 credit hours of research). The non-thesis degree requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework, up to 6 hours of which can be from out-of-department courses. Please check the Schedule of Classes for a current list of available courses.
Missouri S&T’s PhDs are available on a case-by-case basis. Interested students should contact the academic department for details.
- Bachelor’s degree with GPA ≥ 3.0 with a degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering, or a related engineering or science field
- GRE V+Q ≥ 302 (1100 based on previous scale) and GRE AW ≥ 3.5.
- International students: In addition to bachelor's GPA and GRE requirements, TOEFL IBT ≥ 88 or satisfactorily complete an approved English Language Institute program.
- Applicants who have successfully completed a graduate certificate program from Missouri S&T are eligible for admission into the mechanical engineering masters program and need not satisfy the above requirements.

Graduate certificate programs are a great way to start earning college credit toward a graduate degree. The GRE is not required to enter a certificate program. If you complete a certificate program with a grade of B or better in all core courses, you may be accepted into the corresponding master's degree program without taking the GRE*.
Mechanical Engineering Graduate Certificates:
- Composite Materials and Structures
- Control Systems
- Engineering Mechanics
- Energy Conversion & Transport
- Manufacturing Automation
*Completion of a graduate certificate program does not automatically guarantee admission into a corresponding graduate degree program. To continue in a master’s degree program, you must apply. Click here for details and check with academic department for program specific details and requirements.
Courses are delivered over the Internet, via live streaming video; collaborative learning software includes WebEx and Blackboard; classes are archived online for review and easy access.
